Taking A Look At Gnome Packagekit. A Software Centre And Update Manager All In One.
I have found a new software centre that I have been using for about a week. It works on all Linux Desktop environments and is both a software centre, an update manager, and update notifier all in one. It also shows you your update history. Which the Ubuntu Manager and most other software centre's don't do. It also works on Ubuntu and Linux Mint as well as Debian.

Ubuntu comes with additional settings to enable to disable updates and choose when to install them in Software And Updates. Linux Mint also comes with this but has Software Sources which is it's own software and updates settings manager. Brisk Menu An Alternative Start Menu For Mate.

Debian comes with both the Classic and Mint Start Menu but there is also the Brisk Menu. Which is a more modern start menu. (Although I think the Mint Menu is also very good.) Here I take a look at it and how to customise the Brisk Menu. It works on Linux Mint Mate and I think Ubuntu Mate uses it as the default menu.

Neofetch Has Been Discontinued. What's The Alternative?

I just found out yesterday that Neofetch that is in all Linux distros has now been discontinued. So in this video I show how to install Fastfetch which is I think the best option. Linux Mint and Ubuntu comes with a very old version of XScreensaver. Here is how you can get the latest version. This also works on Debian Bookworm. You need to install the screensaver from Debian Trixie which has the latest version. Which can be found on the Debian website here: packages.debian.org/testing/x11/xscreensaver

Thank you for the video! I also saw that neofetch is discontinued and it surprised me because I remember using it since forever. Thanks for recommending fastfetch, hope it gets to default repositories of distributions as well

That video was made a long time ago. Now I have left Windows and use Linux full time as my only operating system. Linux now has so much software you don't need to run Windows apps. Though you can still run Wine if you want and it's supported on Ubuntu and Debian.

No not Windows 11. It's terrible I wouldn't use it. Linux is better. If it's a case of the computer you have does not run it then get a new one. Though most laptops and computers are able to run Linux.
@@AndreaBorman i rather not have to tell my computer what to do by typing in commands with the keyboard its 2024 not the 1980s i know that it isnt always the case but with my experience with Linux was i had to use the terminal about 80 percent of the time it was so confusing because the commands are slightly different with evey disrto arch Linux commands are slightly different from debian

@@ericmoeller3634 Linux has changed a lot from what it was 10 years ago. It is much more user friendly now and you don't have to use the terminal all the time. Linux Mint and Ubuntu come with a lot of software installed with the desktops. So most new users would not have to install anything maybe just another web browser or media player. That can be done from the software centre or in Synaptic Package Manager. I used to like Windows when we had Windows 7 but Microsoft changed everything with Windows 8. They took away the start menu and it got worse with Windows 10 when they changed it again and now Windows 11. Which is even worse. I find it easier to use Linux that I did Windows 11. Which came with my 2 new laptops. I hated it and was glad to uninstall it to get it off my computer.

Well I have been using Linux for 2 years as my only operating system and I have not had any problems at all. I find it much better than Windows 8 which I was using before I changed to Linux. Linux Mint is a good one to start with as it is set up for new users coming over from Windows. Zorin OS is another one worth trying as that also has a Windows 7 style desktop. You can try them both out in live CD then if everything is working you can go ahead and install it. You can also duel boot Linux alongside Windows if you are not ready to delete Windows just yet. I say Give it a try. You have nothing to loose.

@@icesnake90 Linux Mint or Ubuntu will be fine for that as they both have all of the modern drivers and hardware for games. You can also install Wine which runs Windows applications including games. Wine is available in Linux Mint, Ubuntu and Debian from the package manager.

Hey, just got this on my recommended and just wanted to say (not saying where) but in the video you accidentally leak your location. Not sure how someone would fix it on an already-uploaded video, but if you go back to watch this and find it and it's your real location, you should do something because I bet some people online would actually do something bad with it.
I love how you're so knowledgeable about Linux, but you still type like you're pecking at every individual key. I guess you're not really a programmer. I hope Linux gets to everyone, regardless of use case.

I installed Arch on my old macbook and tried using LXQT, as I thought I'd like the look and feel of it as my main desktop PC is running Arch with KDE Plasma, but I really didn't like it. I ended up installing MATE instead and find it's runs great. Not sure how long MATE is going to be supported for, but I'm probably going to use it until it isn't.
As far as I know there are no plans to discontinue Mate. Ubuntu has released it's new LTS version of Ubuntu Mate and it is fully supported on Debian. I don't know if it's different on Arch though.
